ESI QSIB Hookup and Programming

Introduction
The QSIB is an RQ programmable dry contact switch interface in a surface mount box. The QSIB converts dry contact inputs into RQ Bus commands. Up to four dry contact devices (open, close, or sequential) can be connected to the QSIB. CAT5/5e cable is used to connect the QSIB to the RQ Bus. The four switches (1, 2, 3, and 4) can be easily programmed with the RQ Desktop Programmer software. Commands include Open, Close, Stop, Move-To, Tilt-To, and Go-To-Scene. The four switches can be independently programmed for scene control of a single shade or a group of shades.

The QSIB supports four modes of operation -

  • SPDT Momentary [Default]
  • Sequence
  • SPST Maintained
  • SPDT Maintained

This article will walk you through hooking up and programming the ESI QSIB.

Requirements

  • A working ESI RQ network with RQ60 controllers or RQ-embedded motors
  • RQ Bridge, QSIB, Powered Splitter, and RQ devices connected together on the RQ Bus and powered up
  • USB Serial Adaptor software installed on a PC computer/laptop
  • USB Serial Adaptor connected to the PC computer/laptop and the RQ Bridge
  • RQ Desktop Programmer software installed on the computer (this software can be downloaded from the ESI website at: http://elec-solutions.com/software/rq-desktop-programmer.html)

 

Hookup

Steps

  1. Launch the RQ Desktop Programmer software.
  2. Connect to the COM PORT (USB Serial Adaptor).
    1. In the bottom left-hand corner of the RQ Desktop Programmer window, click the “connect” button.
  3. Select an available COM PORT, then click the “Connect” button.
  4. Click the “Get nodes” button.
    1. All nodes connected will populate in the Node List. If nodes do not appear, check cabling between the computer and the RQ Bridge and between the last detected node and the next node.
  5. Click on the QSIB in the Node List to select it (default RQ address is QS1).
  6. Change the Mode of the QSIB if necessary. The default is “SPDT Momentary” mode. See the QSIB Modes section below.
    • Click one of the four buttons to change modes.
  7. Sequence Mode only. If you are in one of the other modes, skip to Step 8. In the Command Menu (middle column), perform the actions as described in APPENDIX 1 below.
    1. You can program a set of four sequence actions for each of the four switches.
    2. You can also set the QSIB to Sequence Mode by clicking the “Set to Sequence Mode” button here.
    3. Enter a sequence action and click the “Send” button to program that sequence action.
    4. Repeat for each Switch #, Sequence #.
  8. Momentary and Maintained Modes only. In the Command Menu (middle column), perform the actions as described in APPENDIX 1 below.
    1. Program an action for switch 1 through 4 under the “QSIB - Make Contact” section.
    2. Click the “Send” button to send the command to the QSIB.
    3. Program an action for switch 1 through 4 under the “QSIB - Break Contact” section.
    4. Click the “Send” button to send the command to the QSIB.
    5. You can click the button “Test Switch [1-4] - Make” or “Test Switch [1-4] - Break” to make sure the RQ device responds as expected.
      The command format is the RQ Address of a device and the action, for example “open”: 123o

    6. NOTE: Do not use an exclamation point or a semi-colon. Those are only used in a Terminal emulator program or in the “Console commands” tab in RQ Desktop Programmer.
  9. Press or toggle the button on the momentary or maintained switch that is connected to the QSIB to make sure the RQ device responds as expected.
  10. Repeat Steps 5 through 9 for each QSIB on the RQ Bus.
  11. FINISH — Close the RQ Desktop Programmer software and disconnect the USB Serial Adaptor.
